DOI : 10.21566/tarbitderg.501708 - The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of general and special combining ability on yield and yield components of some poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) cultivars and their reciprocal crosses. Experiments were conducted over the experimental fields of Opium Alkaloids Factory during the years 2008 and 2010 compatible with partially balanced lattice design with three replications. Plant materials were consisted of 7 registered cultivars and from their reciprocal crosses. Available poppy genotypes were used to determine crossbreed powers of hybrids by finding out the parents with superior general combining ability and the hybrid combinations with superior special combining ability. The yield parameters showing general and specific combining ability were recorded. General combining ability of poppy germplasms were changed between -1.08 and 1.45, the capsule yield varied between -19.12 and 17.39, the seed yield varied between -21.04 and 13.67 and the morphine ratio varied between -0.07 and 0.07. The cultivar TMO 1 had the highest general combining ability regarding its capsule and seed yield. The hybrid combination of Camcı 95 x TMO 1 had the highest special combining ability and recorded the highest capsule and seed yields.
