- The increase in the consumption of vegetable oil expanded the irrigated sunflower acreage in the Central Anatolia. The effect of N fertilizer which is one of the most important input, on the irrigated sunflower yield and the quality was investigated.

The rates of 0, 40, 80, 120, 160, and 200 kg/ha nitrogen were applied to Winiimk-8931 sunflower variety in order to find out the effect of N on seed and oil yields and some yield parameters. Sunflower was irrigated 3 times including post seeding irrigation. Each plot had 8 rows with 35 x 70 cm spacing.

Results revealed that N affected head diameter, seed weight, seed number per head, oil percentage of seed and seed yield. Path analysis indicated that the most effective parameter was seed weight on the increase in seed yield. The impact of N on the oil percentage changed with years.

The amounts of the physical optimum nitrogen be applied to irrigated sunflower for seed and oil production were 187.5 kg/ha and 231.5 kg/ha, respectively. The economic rates were estimated as 170 kg/ha for seed, 175 kg/ha for oil productions.

The research emphasized that with the help of economic N fertilization it was possible to obtain 1.5 to 2 times higher yield than that of without N application. Keywords : Sunflower; fertilization; oil yield; yield
