- The aim of the study was to determine the most efficient dose of gamma irradiation for the mutation breeding and in order to be a variation of wide, the effects of irradiation with gamma doses on some plant characteristics and to compare these effects with non-irradiated control (0 Gy) of Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz.).

In the study, morphological, biological and agricultural characteristics of M1 plants of three Hungarian vetch cultivars (Tarmbeyazı-98, Anadolupembesi-2002 and Oğuz-2002) obtained by irradiation of the seeds with different doses of cobalt 60 gamma rays (0, 40, 60, 80 and 100 Gy) were studied. The laboratory and field experiments were arranged in the split plot design with.

This experiment was carried out at Ankara/Haymana Field Crops Central Research Institute (TARM) and Aplication Farm and in the laboratory. In the present study conducted during the year of 2010 under Ankara/Haymana ecological conditions and in laboratory, seedling germination rate of the seeds, height, seedling fresh weight, seedling dry weight, emergence rate, flowering period, plant height, height of main stem, thickness of main stem, number of main branches per plant, number of pods per plant were recorded.

The results of the study showed that were negatively influenced the application of gamma irradiation by 80 and 100 Gy doses of gamma rays, germination rate of the seeds, seedling height, seedling dry weight, seedling fresh weight, seedling of root height, emergence rate, plant height, height of main stem, number of main branches per plant, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod.

According to LD50 application, It was determined that most efficient of dose especially 80 and 100 Gy gamma irradiation of M1 generations. Keywords : Hungarian vetch, gamma irradiation, M1 plants, LD50 dose, agricultural characteristics
