1 Tarla Bitkileri Merkez Araştırma Enstitüsü, PK 226, 06042, Ulus-Ankara - Food legume, which has a significant place in both Turkish and World's agriculture and trade, recently in production in the country and world. Therefore; a survey was conducted to determine the factors influencing chickpea and lentil production in Turkey.

Data for the study were collected by a survey applied in Ankara, Çorum, Konya, and Yozgat provinces of Central Anatolia in 2001.

Survey results showed the most important factors causing reduction in chickpea and lentil production as low and instability of crop prices. Drawback of Turkish Grain Board from buying food legumes, shortages of stockmarkets for them, and future payments for already sold crop are main marketing problems decreasing food legume production.

Base of social problems is economic. Lack of labor in intensive migration happened villages; higher labor salaries are production limiting factors due to higher production expenses. A finding in the study, on the other hand, is that there is a positive relationship among land size and education level of the owner and family size and owner age.

Antracnose disease in chickpea and weeds in lentil, though they are limiting factors, are not factors risking production. Especially, green lentil producers complain about low yields, lack of quality seeds, and lack of information about growing techniques.

In conclusion; we can say that, to increase food legume production, it is imperative to develop better marketing and pricing policies, to take measure for reducing expenses factors, and to establish farmer associations. Keywords : Chickpea and lentil production; limiting factors;yield
